Welcome to # Sydney . We hope that you enjoy your stay.

Below are some tips on how to survive in the channel. They should make your chatting life easier for IRC and # Sydney .

Nicks

If you find that the nickname you have chosen is already being used by someone else you will receive a message saying it is already in use. It may even be registered to someone else. If the nick you are using suddenly changes, someone else owns the nick and you will need to choose a new one. In some cases, owners of registered nicks have set a '/kill nick' command preventing anyone else from using their registered nick. If this happens to you, simply choose another nick that is not restricted.

There is a special mode +e setting in # Sydney which means you will have to part the channel if you wish to change nicks. This mode setting is used to prevent people from nick flooding, spamming and other channel abuse.

To change your nick, type /nick [insert new nick] First you will need to:
/part # sydney then type
/nick [insert new nick] then type
/join # sydney

If you would like to know how to register your chosen nick, type:
/msg nickop help register. You will find lots of helpful information here about the benefits of registered nicks. If you choose to register your nick you will need to decide on a password before you start (minimum 6 letters + 1 numeral, e.g. mandarin7). When you are ready to register, type:
/msg nickop@austnet.org register [your password here ] [your email address here]
There are lots of other useful help files with austnet and you may also enquire in #asd which is the official services help channel.

NoteOPs

NoteOPs are a handy way of leaving messages to other users when they are not around. It will however only work if both parties have registered nicks. When you want to send a NoteOP to someone you need to type the following:

/msg noteop send [insert their nick] [your message here]
A noteop message would look something like this:
/msg noteop send Joe_Bloggs hey joe, long time no see, send me an email

To use the NoteOP feature you will need to register your nick and to confirm or identify each time you join. To identify to NickOP type: /msg nickop@austnet.org identify [insert your password here]

Once your identity has been confirmed by NickOP you can check to see if anyone has sent you NoteOP messages in your absence by typing:

/msg noteop list new to show all of the messages. To read each one, type /msg noteop read new

To learn more about the benefits of NoteOP type /msg noteop help or ask the helpers in channels #asd or #help

Bans/kicks

Users are sometimes kicked or banned from channels for a variety of reasons. Mainly it is because they have broken the rules of that channel. The rules for this channel are found Here . If you break the rules deal with the ban. Don't evade. It annoys the op who banned you in the first place and will earn you another ban for evasion. Sometimes, ban evasion can lead to glines, which are server bans from the entire network. If you feel you have been unjustly banned you may complain to the correct people. /msg the op concerned, or another op to query the ban and ask them for assistance. DO NOT ABUSE THEM. If this approach is not successful you can email the managers at the complaints@sydneyirc.com address. All complaints received by managers from users are legitimately investigated.

Viruses

Users are often targetted by malicious people who place virus bots or infected clients into the channel. These bots will message you with spam when you join, or may even falsely advise you that you have a virus. The only people who are authorised to tell you that you have a virus is an official #ava (austnet virus assistant) Op. You may already have a virus when you join the channel, in which case a channel op will probably BAN you from #sydney to prevent you infecting others and advise you to go to #ava for assistance with removing the virus.

If you are spammed with a message when you join the channel, /msg an op and let them know. Do not paste the message in open channel or you may be mistakenly glined for sending spam messages. To reduce the risk of being infected with a virus DON'T CLICK ON WEBSITES WHICH MAY BE SENT TO YOU IN PRIVATE MESSAGE WHEN YOU JOIN OR LEAVE A CHANNEL - THEY ARE ALMOST ALWAYS INFECTED WITH A VIRUS!

Channel Operators

These are the people whose names are listed at the top of the channel nick list with a @ sign next to their nicks. They enforce the rules and they are the channel babysitters/censors/watchdogs. Their job is to make # sydney a nice place for everyone to chat. They come from different areas of Oz and around the world. They are ordinary people who give their time willingly to help maintain order in the channel. Get to know them and feel free to chat to them in channel but please don't beg for special privileges such as Ops or +voice.

IRC Operators/Glines

What is a gline? It is a global ban from the entire network. Only IRC operators can set these bans and we have several that reside in and look after the interests of the channel. Please don't annoy Opers. IRC Operators are the ones who look after and maintain the network and save it from spammers and flooders. They are normally busy idling or glining. Whilst they are thought to be human, proof has yet to be determined, so for now, handle with care!

Acronyms/Emoticons

Acronyms are commonly used phrases which are shortened to reduce the need to type words fully. Expressions like afk = away from keyboard; lol = laugh out loud; rofl = rolling on floor laughing. To find more information about Acronyms and Emoticons (smilies), click this link: http://www.mirc.co.uk/emote.html .

Services

Services are programs known as ChanOP, NickOP, NoteOP and LoveOP. Take time to read their help files. They contain a lot of easy to understand information designed to assist you. If you require additional advice, join one of the help channels or #ASD. To access any of the help files, type:

/msg ChanOP help; /msg NickOP help; /msg NoteOP help; /msg LoveOP help.

Conclusion

Just enjoy chatting with people in channel. If people aren't talking, perhaps message someone directly? Say hello to new people, be nice!! Try not to use ASL to start a conversation. Most people prefer to talk to someone new without feeling as though they are obliged to give their “name/rank/serial number” before starting a conversation. If after a brief time you decide to chat elsewhere, be polite enough to say goodbye. Don't forget to read the Rules , and enjoy your time in # sydney .
